A FIFA official accused of taking bribes will be extradited to the United States, Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) has confirmed.
Eugenio Figueredo, the former vice-president of CONMEBOL, was one of a number of FIFA officials to be arrested on suspicion of corruption in May of this year.
Figueredo is accused of accepting bribes from a marketing firm in his native Uruguay in connection with the sale of TV rights for the 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2023 Copa America finals.
He is also alleged to have acquired US citizenship unlawfully.
The FOJ has now announced they have sanctioned his extradition to the US, specifically as the crimes for which he is accused are also punishable under Swiss law.
Figueredo, 83, has 30 days to lodge an appeal against the decision.
