Germany face Argentina in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday and here we take a look at how Joachim Low’s men got there.
Group G: Germany 4 Portugal 0
Germany sounded an early warning to the rest of the world with a dominant victory over Portugal. Thomas Muller, the 2010 golden boot winner, netted a hat-trick and Mats Hummels also scored. Portugal had defender Pepe sent off in the first half after a clash with Muller.
Group G: Germany 2 Ghana 2
Miroslav Klose equalled Ronaldo’s record of 15 World Cup goals with a 71st-minute leveller in a hard-fought draw against Ghana. Mario Gotze had given Germany the lead before Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan put Kwesi Appiah’s men on track for an unlikely win, only for Klose to climb off the bench and secure a point.
Group G: United States 0 Germany 1
Top spot was secured in a rain-soaked Recife as Muller curled in a 55th-minute winner against Jurgen Klinsmann’s United States.
Second round: Germany 2 Algeria 1 (after extra time)
Germany’s biggest weaknesses were exposed by Algeria and only some excellent sweeping by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied them. Andre Schurrle and Mesut Ozil struck in the additional 30 minutes and Germany held on despite Abdelmoumene Djabou’s late goal.
Quarter-final: France 0 Germany 1
A 13th-minute header from Hummels was all Low’s men needed to record a 1-0 victory against a France side who had impressed up to this point. It marked the fourth straight tournament at which Germany had made the last four.
Semi-final: Brazil 1 Germany 7
Germany served up perhaps the most remarkable result in any World Cup as the hosts were humiliated in Belo Horizonte and Klose sealed an individual place in World Cup history. Toni Kroos and Schurrle scored braces to go with goals from Muller, Klose – his record-breaking 16th tournament strike – and Sami Khedira. Germany scored five times in the opening 29 minutes in an incredible display. It broke many records, including handing Brazil their first home defeat in a competitive match since 1975.
