FIFA World Cup Qualifying Preview: Lesotho v Ghana

SoccerNews in World Cup 14 Jun 2013

Ghana must avoid defeat against Lesotho in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier in Maseru to keep their hopes of reaching Brazil alive.

While they are expected to comfortably handle the relative minnows – Lesotho have one goal from four qualifiers, while Ghana have scored 14 – the Black Stars will want to put in a convincing performance ahead of their group decider against Zambia in September.

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah is urging caution ahead of the game.

“We still have to put our feet on the ground,” Appiah told Ghana.

“We don’t have to fly high, we are on track and I think that the Black Stars can qualify to the World Cup but still there is a long way to go and I think we have to be careful. I am happy at how we played against Sudan, at a point we were down with one man but we still won the game.”

Underestimating their opposition is the greatest danger, according to Appiah.

“Playing against teams which are not known are always difficult but I like the spirit the guys showed in Sudan and I think that same seriousness must be attached to the side’s build-up to Sunday’s game,” he said.

Lesotho are well aware they have a dismal record against their more-fancied opponents and Ghana Football Association general secretary Mokhosi Mahate is happy with how preparations for the game are going.

“We are preparing very well and the team has been in camp for about three to four weeks now,” Mahate said.

“The large part of our team is locally-based and we assemble quite often. Besides that, the preparation games that we have played also tell us how ready we are.”

The reverse fixture ended 7-0 in Ghana’s favour – with Dominic Adiyiah and Jordan Ayew scoring braces.
