Former Real Madrid star Luis Figo believes Eusebio remains a more important figure than Cristiano Ronaldo to Portuguese football.
Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or three times and is widely regarded as one of the best players in the modern era.
The 31-year-old has lifted numerous trophies at club level and finally added international silverware to his haul by winning Euro 2016 in July.
Eusebio, who passed away at the age of 71 in January 2014, is also seen as one of the greatest ever after a hugely successful career with Benfica and Portugal.
And while acknowledging Ronaldo’s undeniable talent, Figo has personal reasons for affording Eusebio pride of place in his pantheon of Portuguese greats.
“I admire Cristiano and I enjoy seeing his achievements,” he told AS.
“He just gets better every year. He’s making football history.
“But even though I never saw Eusebio play, I would put him at number one for everything he stands for, for the love he showed me, his friendship and his advice.
“Everyone will say that I say that for this reason or that reason but ultimately it’s just about respect.
“Everyone makes history in their own time.”
