David Moyes will be a success at Manchester United, according to many famous voices in the football world.
Moyes, the current Everton boss, will take over from Alex Ferguson at the end of the season, after the 71-year-old announced his retirement on Wednesday.
Whether Moyes can handle the pressure that comes with such a job is unknown, and his critics will point to the fact that he is yet to win a major trophy as a manager.
But he received a vote of confidence from many football figures on Thursday, starting with former Manchester United defender Denis Irwin.
“I think David Moyes will be very similar to Sir Alex, a tough old Scot from the same mould,” Irwin told MUTV.
“This has come from Sir Alex and Bobby Charlton’s recommendation, this is going to bring stability which is important to the club.
“Wisely the club have listened to the manager and the hierarchy and now we’ve got David Moyes, I’m sure he’ll do a fantastic job.”
Ex-Everton player Kevin Ratcliffe also gave a glowing reference of Moyes and hopes his former side have a contingency plan following his departure.
“You’re losing a manager that has been at a club for 10 years,” Ratcliffe said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“He’s not brought a trophy into Everton, instead he’s brought a foundation and has put us on the map.
“I just hope Everton have been aware of the situation and have been working on bringing in a new manager.”
Moyes’ fellow managers believe United have made the perfect appointment with Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert and ex-Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez convinced Moyes can handle the pressure.
“He’s a good manager,” interim Chelsea manager Benitez said.
“I think that he will have a very good team, so I’m sure he will compete at the top and he can win trophies with a big club.
“It’s not easy to find someone like Ferguson, but he’s a manager with experience in the Premier League. He knows the players, he knows the club and the Premier League.
“He could be a good appointment, but it takes time to say.”
Villa manager Lambert added: “If anybody can enjoy it and keep the continuity there, I am pretty sure David would do it.
“He’s been a sensation at Everton and I think he will be able to handle it no problem. I don’t think Manchester United make decisions wrong.”
