Fowler confident on Liverpool chances

SoccerNews in English Premier League 29 Jun 2013

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes the club can challenge for a UEFA Champions League place next season.

The Merseyside club have failed to finish in the top five of the Premier League table for the last four seasons.

That followed a run of 10 successive top-five finishes and Fowler, who scored 184 goals for Liverpool, feels the time is right for Brendan Rodgers’ side to move back into the top echelons of the Premier League again.

And Fowler thinks that the club’s new signings – Spanish pair Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto, Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and veteran Ivorian defender Kolo Toure have all signed for Liverpool in the off-season – will improve consistency at Anfield.

“At the start of every season, we always have aims and ambitions to get into the top four and get as high up the table as we can,” Fowler told the club’s official website.

“We didn’t do it last season, but you could see the progression was slowly getting there – we were getting better all the time.

“For this season, there have been a few more players added to the squad, so I think the consistency will be a little bit better.

“The likes of Manchester United and Chelsea have got new managers now, so hopefully it will be a bit of a sticking point for them – but in terms of Brendan Rodgers and the squad we’re putting together, I think we can certainly challenge for that top four.”

Liverpool will open their 2013-14 Premier League campaign with a home fixture against Stoke City.
