Former Marseille coach Eric Gerets is poised to become the new manager of the Morocco national team.

“Mr Gerets is on the verge of signing a contract with Morocco to become their new coach,” a well placed Moroccan football source told AFP on Tuesday.

The post has been vacant since the sacking of Frenchman Roger Lemerre last year.

Belgium’s Gerets, who had been in the running to take charge of Ivory Coast at the World Cup, is under contract with Saudi Arabia side Al Hilal, the side he joined this year after leaving Marseille, until 2011.

Gerets won 86 caps with Belgium and helped them to the 1986 World Cup semi-finals. He also won the then European Cup in 1988 with PSV Eindhoven.
