Germany defender Marcell Jansen said Thursday he is optimistic of being able to play in June’s World Cup as he battles to overcome an ankle injury.

The 24-year-old had been in plaster since picking up the injury four weeks ago, but Germany team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt says the ankle is healing well and Jansen can begin strength training and running next week.

Germany coach Joachim Loew has been informed of Jansen’s progress with the World Cup squad set to be announced on May 6.

“I am pleased the doctors are happy with the way the ankle is healing,” said Jansen, who won the last of his 30 caps in September 2009.

“Of course, I will train as hard as I can and hope to improve my World Cup chances.”

Jansen had caught the eye this season with several impressive performances for Hamburg and showed his versatility by playing in midfield, despite winning most of his caps for Germany in defence.

Germany have drawn Australia, Serbia and Ghana in Group D with the World Cup set to start on June 11.
