Gerrard positive despite injury blows

Steven Gerrard insists there is still room for improvement following England’s win over Belgium on Saturday.

A first-half goal from Danny Welbeck was enough to seal a 1-0 victory at Wembley, making it two wins out of two for new Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson.

But, Gerrard is adamant the squad will not get ahead of themselves and are fully aware of the task at hand for success in Poland and Ukraine.

“The mood’s good,” Gerrard told reporters. “We’re on the back of two wins but we’re not getting carried away. We know we can still improve.

“We need to keep listening to the manager, keep getting his ideas, and I’m sure we’ll improve and progress as time goes on.”

Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry and John Ruddy have all had to be replaced from the initial Euro 2012 squad due to injury, and Gary Cahill is now a doubt after being substituted in the first half against Belgium.

The Chelsea centre-back was forced off after being pushed into goalkeeper Joe Hart by Belgian winger Dries Mertens and has had an X-ray on his jaw to determine whether he will be fit to make the tournament.

Gerrard added: “We’ve got our fingers crossed. It’ll be a huge blow if Gary has to drop out as well.

“He’s had a fantastic six months since he’s gone to Chelsea and we need him out there, so it’ll be a huge blow if he’s out as well.”
