Gerrard urges Liverpool to sign Sterling and Henderson to new deals

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has urged the club to sign star duo Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson to new contracts in the very near future.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has urged the club to sign star duo Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson to new contracts in the very near future.

Gerrard, 34, will join MLS side LA Galaxy when his contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season, but the Reds’ captain is hoping the likes of Henderson and Sterling, who has been linked with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in recent times, will stay on Merseyside for the foreseeable future.

With Henderson’s deal set to expire in the summer of 2016 and Sterling’s in the following year, the former England international has told Liverpool to offer the duo new deals as soon as possible, and understandably so.

“They need to sign him [Sterling] now. He knows what I want him to do, not just him but Jordan Henderson as well,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.

“When I was coming through at Liverpool, every time you got near a couple of years left, your contract would be renewed. There would be no worrying or panic.

“I see Henderson with a year left, Sterling – it’s in the paper too much and there is no smoke without fire. For me the message to the club is to get these done sharpish.

“These [players] are the future of the club and I want to watch this team do well. I want to see them in cup finals, I want to see them challenging for leagues, and it is them – Sterling, Henderson, Daniel Sturridge, Coutinho who they have just signed up – who are the players who are going to deliver. It’s vital we get them done before it’s too late.”

Pulis: Berahino has been in the ‘naughty chair’

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis has revealed top-scorer Saido Berahino spent time in the ‘naughty chair’ regarding his recent comments about leaving The Hawthorns.

The England youth international, 21, suggested he would ‘go on to bigger things’ after helping the club stave off relegation this season.

Despite his comments, Berahino is expected to start when Albion visit Turf Moor to face Burnley on Sunday.

“He’s been in the naughty chair – but he’s okay. It’s not too far from my desk,” Pulis said.

“Again, I do feel he’s gone and done an interview for something else, not for what he ended up talking about.

“The club has got to look at looking after the younger players and making sure they are guided through what is a minefield at times.

“I’ve spoken to him and I’ve spoken to his people. The most important thing Saido has got to do is don’t talk about what he wants to do – but actually go out there and do it. That’s what all the good players do. They actually go out and perform on the pitch.”
