Giggs: United looking for ‘winners’ in transfer market

Giggs - United looking for 'winners' in transfer market

Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has revealed the club are searching for “winners” during the summer transfer window.

Despite finishing 17 points adrift of English Premier League champions Chelsea last term, United’s fourth-place finish was enough to book their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

However, United will surely have greater ambitions next season, and with the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Sergio Ramos being linked with summer moves to Old Trafford in recent weeks, Giggs knows the club must add top quality ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

“If there are players available who are winners, who are proven, then, yeah, let’s go and get them,” Giggs told The Sunday Times. “And with any good team the spine is important. Midfield, striker, center backs, goalkeeper. I’m sure we’ll be looking to strengthen the spine all the way through.

“We obviously need to strengthen because we were fourth [last season]. We weren’t first, second or third. And the teams above us will strengthen, too.

“There’s the added challenge of the Champions League, and we need players that are going to improve us. But we’re not too far away. We had a great record last season in the big games and the problem was the consistency. We dropped points we shouldn’t have and got off to a bad start.”

United are priced at 11/2 to win the Premier League title next season.

Turan looking for a new club

Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan has confirmed his agent Ahmet Bulut is in talks with three to four clubs regarding a potential summer move for the Turkey international.

Earlier this week Bulut revealed Turan, who joined Atletico from Turkish giants Galatasaray for €12 million in the summer of 2011, would prefer a move to the England despite interest from AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

“His intention is to leave Spain this summer. His will is to leave and to play in the Premier League, that is the path he would like to take to continue his career,” Bulut said.

“We are currently in talks with three teams but I cannot reveal the names of the clubs. However, I can tell you that they are the best in England and in European football.

“It’s true that Milan and PSG are two of the six teams that are interested in him. But the Italian team is not among our options because they will not play in the Champions League next season.

“PSG is a possibility although Arda always has the desire to play in England.”

In response to the speculation surrounding his future, Turan tweeted: “The transfer rumors are not entirely correct. My agent is currently in touch with 3-4 clubs. I will update you all if a deal is made.”

Turan, 28, scored two goals in 32 league appearances for Atletico last season.
