Gignac delighted to end barren run

​Andre-Pierre Gignac was delighted to have finally proved his goalscoring class after finding the net in France’s 3-0 victory over Armenia.

The in-form Marseille striker, who has nine Ligue 1 goals to his name so far this season, earned his first cap in over a year when he came on as a late substitute against Portugal last Saturday.

Gignac was named in the starting XI on Tuesday in Yerevan for the first time since France’s elimination from the 2010 World Cup, and he justified coach Didier Deschamps’ faith by converting from the penalty spot in the 55th minute.

That goal also came five years since his last international strike in a 3-1 victory over Austria, with Loic Remy and Antoine Griezmann also on target at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium.

“Personally it feels good,” Gignac told TF1. “It feels good for the team as well.

“Inevitably when you come back after a year’s absence, you want to prove yourself.

“I’m glad to have done it tonight.”
