Godin happy to get on the scoresheet

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin was thrilled to score his team’s first goal against Real Valladolid on Sunday at the Vicente Calderon.

The Uruguayan intercepted a pass in the centre of the pitch, played some great one-two passing with Koke before receiving a beautiful through pass from the midfielder and chipping it over Jaime for the opening goal.

Los Colchoneros ended up winning the match 2-1 after Falcao converted a penalty given for a foul on Diego Costa.

“Scoring is always nice, especially for a defender,” the 26-year-old reflected on LigaBBVA.com.

“I am very happy with the goal. It’s always nice to score as a defender. On top of that, if your team wins, the better.

“I did not hesitate and just went on the attack. The ball cut to me and created space for me to do a chip. The finish was instinctive.”

The central defender expressed gratitude as chants of ‘U-ru-guayo, U-ru-guayo’ rang out from the stands after his goal.

“It is always an honour that the fans recognize you your job. It was incredible,” he said.

Godin then discussed the strength of the capital city club as they have now won their last five games by a combined score of 17-5 and have started getting goals from the midfielders.

“The truth is that the team is very strong. It is showing a great attitude and we have a good feeling. But we have to keep thinking game by game. That will be our philosophy,” he said.

“That’s good (that midfielders have started scoring) because if Falcao has a cold, what do we do? Do we not play?

“The group is very good and it is being demonstrated with these goals. Falcao is essential, but we are a team.”
