Gold rush for China at Asian Games

China’s dominance continues at the Asian Games with another 15 gold medals on Tuesday, including six in the swimming pool.

The Asian powerhouse took their tally to 40 golds and 82 overall by winning six of the seven on offer in the day’s swimming finals.

Only the 200 metres breaststroke was not won by China as Fu Yuanhui (women’s 50m freestyle), Ning Zetao (men’s 50m freestyle), Ye Shiwen (women’s 400m individual medley), Chen Xinyi (women’s 100m butterfly), Sun Yang (men’s 400m freestyle relay) and the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team all celebrated on the top of the podium.

China dominated the shooting events too with Yang Haoran, Zhu Jingyu and the men’s 10m air rifle team claiming three of the four golds on offer.

Hosts South Korea also had a productive day in Incheon as they secured another five golds.

Kim Dong-seon took first place in the dressage intermediate individual freestyle ahead of compatriot Hwang Young-shik with a score of 77.225.

Both fencing medals were taken by the home nation too as the women’s sabre team beat China 45-41 and the men’s epee squad overcame Japan 25-21.

In a tense evening of competition in the badminton, South Korea beat rivals China 3-2 in the men’s team final, Lee Hyun-il securing the gold with victory in the deciding match against Gao Huan.

The men’s judo team defeated Kazakhstan by waza-ari, but they were beaten in the women’s final by Japan.

Yuya Kamoto took Japan’s second gold in the men’s all-around gymnastics final with 87.950 points while Yao Jinnan of China claimed the women’s title.

Thailand claimed gold and bronze in the bowling courtesy of Yannaphon Larpapharat and Kunaksorn Sithiphol, with China’s Du Jianchao splitting the pair to take silver.

Japan’s third success came in the men’s omnium 40km race as Eiya Hashimoto held off the challenge from Uzbekistan’s Timur Gumerov to take gold.

In the women’s singles squash final, Malaysia’s Nicol David was a 9-11 11-6 11-5 12-10 winner over countrywoman Low Wee Wern.

The men’s singles gold was taken by Kuwait’s Abdullah Al-Muzayen, who came from two games down to edge India’s Saurav Ghosal 10-12 2-11 14-12 11-8 11-9 in a thrilling final.

In Wushu, the women’s changquan final was won by China’s Kan Wencong (9.75), while compatriot Chen Zhouli took the men’s taijijian and taijiquan finals.

China’s final two gold medals of the day came in the synchronised swimming free combination final and the men’s weightlifting 77-kilogram event as Lyu Xiaojun claimed top spot.

North Korea’s only win on Tuesday came in the women’s weightlifting 63kg class with Jo Pokh-yang.

Meanwhile, the team tennis finals will see Kazakhstan face China in the men’s competition and China will face Chinese Taipei in the women’s.

China and Sri Lanka booked their places in the women’s cricket quarter finals and there was a 5-0 win for Vietnam over Hong Kong in the women’s football.

The hockey, beach volleyball, basketball and baseball competitions all continued with the pool stages, while the water polo round robin games saw wins for Japan, Kazakhstan and China.

Archery saw the ranking rounds in both the team and individual events, while the group matches in the Sepaktakraw and Volleyball produced victories for Indonesia and Qatar.

There were also five repechages in the rowing that included a win for Chinese Taipei in the women’s quadruple sculls.
