Bradford City have signed veteran striker Andy Gray on a free transfer after Yorkshire rivals Leeds United cancelled his contract.

The 35-year-old – who came through the youth team at Leeds and is the nephew of club legend Eddie Gray – returned to Elland Road in the off-season on a free transfer.

But after scoring one goal in his nine appearances, largely off the bench, Leeds agreed to release the striker in order for his Bradford move to go through.

“I’m delighted to have brought Andy into the football club,” Bradford manager Phil Parkinson told the club’s website.

“We’ve tried to sign him before in the summer, and we’re really pleased we have him here now.

“It will be good for the lads to see a fresh face around the training ground. Andy will bring a lot to the squad and help support the current strikers we have here already.”

Gray has also previously played at Bradford and won the club’s player of the year award in the 2003/04 season, one of his three at the club.

The deal is still subject to Football Association and Football League clearance but Gray is expected to make his debut for his new club against Oxford United on Saturday.

Gray will not be eligible to play in the second leg of Bradford’s Carling Cup semi-final – in which they lead Aston Villa 3-1 – or the final if they make it, as he is already cup-tied.
