Grenier puts contract talks on hold

SoccerNews in Ligue 1 19 Apr 2013

Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier says he will wait until the end of the season to discuss the terms of a new contract with the club.

According to L’Equipe, Grenier, whose contract expires in 2014, is looking to up his salary from 80,000 euros a month to a breath-taking 250,000 euros.

The Frenchman believes there is more at stake than personal gain at the moment with qualification for next season’s Champions League the most important target.

“Now is not a good time to negotiate,” the 22-year-old told L’Equipe.

“Results take priority. Maybe (I am greedy) but no figures have been mentioned. I know what I want but the club don’t know. I will ask to receive what I think I am worth.

“But I don’t want to talk about money. In France, money is taboo. There is so much jealousy.”

Yoann Gourcuff has taken more than his fair share of flack this season after netting only once in 12 appearances, but his team-mate is surprised by the negativity aimed towards the playmaker.

“We have always got on. I don’t pretend to know everything about him, but the stuff I read and hear, it’s just not him,” Grenier said.

“It is absurd that there is so much talk about him because there is not really much to say.”

Lyon are third in Ligue 1 and are only two points clear of the last Champions League qualifying spot, with Saint-Etienne hot on their heels.
