Poland international Ebi Smolarek is being given a trial at Bundesliga leaders Hamburg as the German club look to replace knee-injury victim and Peru striker Paolo Guerrero, it was revealed Wednesday.

The 28-year-old wing or striker has been on trial in Hamburg since Tuesday while Hamburg trainer Bruno Labbadia checks on the form of the Polish star who is currently out of contract.

“We want to look at him over several days,” said Labbadia.

Guerrero damaged the cruciate ligament in his left knee while on international duty and is expected to be out for months, while Smolarek is being considered as back up to Croatia’s Mladen Petric and Sweden’s Marcus Berg.
