Hammers & Blades finally end Tevez saga

West Ham United and Sheffield United have finally reached an agreement to end the long-running argument over former Hammers star Carlos Tevez, according to BBC Sport.

Tevez played a key role in the Hammers’ Premier League survival in the 2006/07 season, whilst the Sheffield United were relegated instead and the Blades have since insisted that Tevez was ineligible to play after the East London club was fined £5.5 million for breaking rules in the signings of Argentinian duo Tevez and Javier Mascherano .

After numerous court battles the two clubs have finally reached an agreement over the matter, with a compensation figure beleived to be in the region of £15 million to be paid in installments to Sheffield United.

Coca-Cola Championship side Sheffield United’s chairman Kevin McCabe said: “We are happy and satisfied with the settlement with West Ham.

“Throughout the finalisation of the terms for the agreement, the discussions were friendly, co-operative and in the best of spirit with both the Blades and Hammers advisory teams.

“We are two clubs with a fantastic footballing history who now want to move on and focus on the business of playing football – hopefully for us against the Hammers in the Premier League next season.”

A tribunal to decide the level of compensation awarded to Sheffield Utd was set to launch on Monday, although it will no longer be required though the F.A and Premier League are continuing to investigate the conduct of some West Ham representatives over the affair.

West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury said: “For everyone concerned, the time was right to draw a line under this whole episode.

“We have had very positive discussions over a number of days with Sheffield United and acknowledge their willingness to resolve this in the best interests of both clubs.”

West Ham were fined £5.5 million in April 2007 for the signings of Tevez and Mascherano after the club broke rules concerning third-party agreements connected with the duo. Since then Tevez has gone on to play for Manchester United, whilst Mascherano signed for Liverpool.
