Napoli attacker Marek Hamsik has revealed he turned down the opportunity to join Milan on the advice of his club’s president and coach.

The Slovakia international has scored 10 goals and provided 22 assists in 42 appearances this season, helping the Naples outfit to second place in Serie A – seven points clear of Milan in third.

And Hamsik said he was delighted to have decided to stay with the club despite interest from Massimiliano Allegri’s team prior to this season.

“I spoke with president (Aurelio) De Laurentiis and then with (Walter) Mazzarri,” he told Guerin Sportivo. “Both of them explained to me why the club did not want to sell me.

“According to them, it would have been a mistake to join Milan. That has been invaluable advice. I am happy in Naples.

“The people love me and the fans appreciate me for what I am.

“The coach is our secret weapon here. If, in these last few years, we have obtained some extraordinary results, it is thanks to Mazzarri.

“He makes everyone feel important.”

Napoli will take part in their final home game of the season when they meet Siena at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday.
