Acting FIFA president Issa Hayatou has undergone a successful kidney transplant, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed.
Hayatou, who also serves as CAF president, was appointed as acting FIFA president after Sepp Blatter – who is the subject of criminal proceedings in Switzerland – was relieved of all duties by the governing body last month.
That decision came following the FIFA Ethics Committee’s move to ban Blatter from all football-related activity for 90 days.
And Hayatou is to continue in the role despite the surgery, although he will have a few days rest to recover from the operation.
CAF secretary general Hicham El Amrani said: “I am pleased with the positive news given by the medical personnel. On behalf of CAF and on my own behalf, I wish our President a speedy recovery.
“In the coming days, I will be in regular contact with him and I am glad to know that in future, he will be back on our side.”
