Henry, Beckham regret slip-ups

SoccerNews in MLS 7 Oct 2012

Thierry Henry says New York Red Bulls remain focused on contesting the MLS play-offs after their 2-0 loss at home to the Chicago Fire.

Frenchman Henry has scored 14 goals for the Red Bulls so far this season, but stressed their strong position in the league – fourth place with 53 points – is down to a team effort.

Red Bulls now have a two-week break before they take on league leaders Sporting Kansas City.

“We got what we deserved,” he said.

“They (Chicago Fire) were the better team, more organised – they wanted it more.

“Having said that, we are still not out and it is going to be a fight, I think.

“Obviously some teams will drop points but the team on top at the moment (Sporting KC) deserves to be on top.

“I can sit here and say ‘we should have been this, we should have been that’ but they deserve to be where they are.

“They play better than us and they want it more. If we get to the play-offs we will hopefully play them again but we will have to see.

“It looks like it is going to be more difficult for us because everyone is trying to avoid the ‘if’ of getting to the play-off contest but we will have another go soon and see where we are.”

Reigning champions LA Galaxy also dropped points, going down 2-1 at home to Real Salt Lake.

“We made sloppy mistakes during the game,” Galaxy star David Beckham said.

“We played really well in the first half, it was just the mistakes – I think mistakes were the key thing.

“And we didn’t put our chances away. Throughout the team we had good chances and when you play against good teams like Salt Lake you have to put those chances away.

“I’m not perfect yet but I am getting there. Getting 90 (minutes) in today was important for myself, but I’m not perfect yet. And we were all disappointed.”
