Jupp Heynckes believes Bayern Munich were full value for their 4-1 win over BATE Borisov on Wednesday night.
Despite going down to 10 men early in the second-half, the Germans prevailed thanks to strikes from Mario Gomez, Thomas Muller, Xherdan Shaqiri and David Alaba, sealing both a commanding success and top spot in Gr
“I’m obviously very satisfied because the priority was to win and make sure of first place [in our group],” the coach told reporters.
“The team were very determined and very alert. We conceded almost nothing in defence. Overall, it was an authoritative display.
“All credit to my team because the Champions League is such a difficult competition – the runners-up are all very strong. That means it’s good we’re away from home in the first-leg.”
Gomez broke Bayern’s duck at the Allianz Arena to further his tally to two goals since his comeback from injury five matches ago, and he feels he is regaining his sharpness in the penalty box.
“I knew that I would struggle a bit after such a long injury break, but I’ve trained very hard,” the Germany international said.
“I tried to position myself well and I think I did that today.
“It was important to win the group and we did it. That was our purpose and the instructions of our coach.
“We wanted to show our supporters some good football and we managed it especially in the second half. We knew that it would be difficult against a Belarusian side, because they were defending very hard, so the first goal was important.
“But we did well afterwards and produced many chances, so we provided some good football for the fans.”
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer added: “We wanted to set an example and beat BATE. We won emphatically and we deserved. It wasn’t exciting at all, but we showed the right attitude from the beginning.”
