Hodgson keeps faith with Young

Manchester United winger Ashley Young is set to remain in the England line-up for their final Group D game against Ukraine.

It looks as if boss Roy Hodgson will keep faith in the 26-year-old who will likely remain on the left-wing, despite two poor performances in England’s opening games.

The Three Lions go into Tuesday’s game knowing a draw would be enough to progress to the knockout stages, but they could still finish top of the group if they were to better France’s result against Sweden.

The England manager believes Young will benefit from the return of club team-mate Wayne Rooney, who is available after a two-game ban.

“Ashley was very good in the two pre-tournament matches we played against Norway and Belgium,” Hodgson told reporters.

“I think now that he’s back in his classic position and he has got Wayne playing alongside him – who he does play alongside every week – we will see more and more from him.

“And I have faith in him, because I think he is a very good quality wide player, a very good quality winger, with a lot of ability. I am hoping he will show that ability against Ukraine.”

The only other choice Hodgson is now likely to make is between James Milner and Theo Walcott for the right-wing position. Milner has started both games so far, but Walcott came off the bench in last Friday’s 3-2 win over Sweden and scored the second, before setting up Danny Welbeck for the winner.

Despite suffering a slight hamstring injury, the Arsenal winger is still likely to be in contention for selection.
