England manager Roy Hodgson has told reporters he was ‘very sad’ to hear the news of Harry Redknapp leaving Tottenham.

Hodgson and Redknapp were seen as the favourites for the England manager’s job prior to the appointment of the former West Brom boss in May.

And the Hodgson expressed his surprise at Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s decision to part ways with Redknapp, revealing he had already contacted the 64-year-old.

“I was very sad to hear the news. I’ve texted him this afternoon, I don’t expect a reply because I imagine he will be absolutely snowed under at the moment with sympathetic messages,” he said.

“It came as a surprise to me and I’m disappointed for him, and I wish him all the best. And I hope the next job that he wants comes along soon very soon and he’ll be happy in that job.”

However, Hodgson refused to be drawn on whether he believed the decision to relieve Redknapp of his duties was the correct one.

“I’m not in a position to comment on the decision that Spurs have made and I have had no chance to speak to Harry to find out how he feels about it,” he said.

In a statement on Tottenham’s website, Redknapp thanked the players and staff who had worked under him during his time at the club.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Spurs and am proud of my achievements. I have had a fantastic four years with the club, at times the football has been breathtaking,” he said.

“I am sad to be leaving but wish to thank the players, staff and fans for their terrific support during my time there.”
