Honduras moved to the top of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying on Saturday night with a convincing 4-1 victory over Trinidad & Tobago. Mexico, meanwhile, stunned Costa Rica 3-0 in San José to stay in contention.
Honduras 4-1 Trinidad & Tobago
Carlos Pavón opened the scoring for a much-improving Honduras after just 19 minutes, and the stunned islanders managed to go only eight more minutes before Pavón snagged his second.
Honduras’ dominance continued in the second half as Amado Guevara made it 3-0 just past the hour mark, and David Suazo completed the demolition in the 82nd minute. Christon Baptiste added a late consolation for Trinidad.
Costa Rica 0-3 Mexico
Costa Rica looked to bounce back from a 4-0 loss to Honduras, but their woes continued as Mexico dominated Los Ticos, sending the hosts to fourth position in the standings.
Gio Dos Santos snatched momentum for the Mexicans just before halftime, and the goal seemed to stun the Costa Ricans into submission.
Guillermo Franco furthered Mexico’s lead in the 61st minute when he slotted into an open net after a Mexican break, and Andrés Guardado completed the scoring in the 70th minute.
Honduras sit top of the table on 13 points, ahead of the USA on goal difference. Mexico and Costa Rica sit on 12 points, but Mexico’s goal difference is better.
