How long can Tottenham hold on to Harry Kane?

The above question seems to come out of nowhere. At Tottenham, Harry Kane is the team’s talisman, the star player and a hero to the clubs fans. He also came through the youth system at the north London club. ‘He’s one of our own’ and all that.

Kane recently stated that he would be happy at Tottenham as long as Spurs are challenging for trophies. However, the striker is undoubtedly a top striker and they have a habit of finding their way to the top clubs in the world.

Reports from Spain suggest that European champions Real Madrid are set to go all out this summer to sign Kane. Tottenham got the better of the Spanish champions in the group stages.

While Los Blancos are also struggling in La Liga, they are still European champions and could be once more this season. It would be a hard move to turn down.

Can he really challenge for the big trophies at Spurs?

Kane is probably asking this question himself. No doubt, Tottenham are a good team. However, they look to have hit a glass ceiling to what they can achieve. Two seasons of fighting for the title are now over.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are back in the fight for a Champions League position this season. Spurs have not pushed on this season. However, the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United have improved, via investing big money in the team.

Tottenham are a few players away from being a title-winning team. The clubs hierarchy will never invest the money to win the title, though, whereas City’s and even United’s will.

Kane looks very unlikely to win a major trophy at Tottenham. If he moved on then he would have a chance to pick up silverware.

Wages a problem at Tottenham

One factor in Kane and his presence at Tottenham is the fact that the north London club have such a tight wage structure. Spurs do not pay awful wages.

However, Kane must be looking at other players at other clubs who are not as important or talented picking up twice his wage and ‘thinking why am I not getting the same wage’. It is only human nature.

It would not be Kane being greedy. You could understand his thinking if he was thinking that. I seriously doubt many people in any industry would be happy to pick up a smaller wage than somebody else who is not as good at their job as they are.

Until the club changes the wage structure, then I do not believe they will progress, as they could lose their best players to clubs who are willing to give them parity with their contemporaries.

Harry Kane not going yet

I cannot see Harry Kane lured away to another club in the next few years. Maybe if Spurs do not progress next season, the striker will be thinking about making the move. However, he seems happy where he is for now.

The striker’s priority, for now, will be helping Tottenham finish in the top-four this season, something they are odds of 11/10 to achieve. The north London club are also still in the Champions League and will want to go as deep into the competition as they can this season.

Real Madrid’s interest may not materialise in the summer. However, if Kane continues to be prolific for the north London club and Spurs fail to challenge for the big trophies, then it is only a matter of time before the striker gets restless in north London and looks to move on.

Will Real Madrid really attempt to sign Harry Kane in the summer?
