Norwich manager Chris Hughton has insisted that Nathan Redmond made a mature decision in choosing to join the club.

The 19-year-old winger made the switch from Birmingham to Carrow Road on Thursday, with a four-year deal agreed.

Redmond, who has represented England at all levels from Under-16 through to Under-21, had been with Birmingham for his entire career.

Hughton has hailed the young player for his decision to make the transition.

“Nathan and his advisors had other options but they’ve been very, very mature in deciding this was the place for him to come to,” he told BBC East.

“It is a coup for us, because there was interest from a lot of clubs, and we feel he’s a player with real potential. Now it’s up to us to make sure we develop him in the right way to fulfil that potential.

“I know him well – he’s very motivated, and someone who wants to progress and is prepared to work hard to do so.”

Redmond played 42 times for Birmingham last season and scored two goals in the League Cup, while he also played under Hughton before the manager made the move in 2012.

He insisted that the 54-year-old has had a huge impact on his career.

“I’d probably say I’ve played some of my best football under him so far,” he told the club’s official website.
