Huntelaar set for Ajax return

German media outlet Bild claims that Schalke striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar will probably return to Ajax at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old will be out of contract at the end of the current campaign, and with automatic extension no longer an option due to the Dutchman not taking part in enough games, a summer exit is on the cards.

Schalke have no intention of offering Huntelaar a new deal, as his €7m a year salary has proved a major burden on club’s budget.

Everything suggests that Huntelaar will return to Ajax in the summer as his family lives in the Netherlands and the player has a soft spot for the Amsterdam ArenA outfit.

In spite of the lack of action this term, the Dutchman will go down as one of Schalke’s best ever signings, having scored a total of 125 goals for the German giants.
