I won´t interfere with Mourinho, says Moratti

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti said on Monday that he would not be drawn into interfering in relationships between coach Jose Mourinho and the club’s players.

Moratti was speaking a day after Mourinho heavily criticised some unnamed players for failing to follow his instructions during Sunday’s 0-0 home draw against 10-man Genoa.

Mourinho proceeded to claim in his post match press conference that certain players would be left out of the match-day squad for the trip to Fiorentina on Wednesday, essentially as punishment for failing to follow his orders.

The Portuguese coach’s outburst stunned the Italian media, who are still getting accustomed to his maveric ways.

“The relationship between the coach and the players will be left alone, the club won’t take any measures because there’s been no offence committed, there are only duties on one side and the other,” said Moratti.

“They will do what they have to and then we’ll see the results.”

Moratti also commented on the row between Mourinho and Julio Cruz, which took place on the pitch during Sunday’s game.

“I know Mourinho brought certain strikers to this country and Cruz was not amongst those. It’s a problem between Mourinho and the players.

“It would be like going into a company to see if the workers are arguing: it can happen but that’s not to say that you should intervene from up high.

“It’s up to Mourinho to make his decisions with respect to his ideas about the game and how he believes the players should express themselves on the field.”

However, while Mourinho was unhappy with the result on Sunday, which meant both Napoli and Udinese joined Inter on 17 points at the top of the table, Moratti saw the point gained in a different light.

“The point against Genoa was a good point because it is important to stay at the top in this most difficult period when we’re playing every three days.”

Mourinho had been far less satisfied after the game, slamming his players.

“This was an Inter without discipline but Genoa did what they had to, at the end I congratulated their coach and players,” he said.

“I’m not very happy because I always try to win and always want to win, when we don’t win things are not good. I will talk to the players.

“We allowed Genoa to have an easy afternoon and two or three of my players weren’t at their best.

“Maybe the Genoa coach has a greater ability to influence his players’ mentality than that of Inter, hence I have to show my players that there is only one chief here. I’ll leave two or three players at home on Wednesday.

“Maybe some people don’t know me yet and they will start to on Tuesday when we tell them who’s been selected.

“It’s easy to understand who will be left out, you just need to watch this match.

“With me those who think only about themselves and not about the team don’t play.”
