Polls may open for the Italian general election on Sunday, but for many in Milan a certain football match might take precedence.

Polls may open for the Italian general election on Sunday, but for many in Milan a certain football match might take precedence.

The city’s derby takes place as Inter and Milan go head-to-head at the San Siro in Serie A.

Massimiliano Allegri’s AC Milan side go into the game full of confidence after stunning Barcelona 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.

But Allegri’s counterpart Inter Milan boss Andrea Stramaccioni still doesn’t believe their opponents begin as favourites.

“Milan has just defeated the strongest team in the world without even letting them shoot at goal once, while we haven’t been consistent in results and performances recently and lost too many players on the way, so I understand why you consider them the favourite team to win this derby, but I don’t agree, I’m convinced of the potential of my team,” Stramaccioni said.

As well as beating Barca, Milan have also surged up their domestic table to recover from their worst ever start to now lie in the top three.

But despite struggling in the league recently, Inter also impressed in the week by thrashing CFR Cluj 4-0 in the UEFA Europa League.

“I believe that tomorrow’s match is going to be difficult and well-balanced at the same time,” Allegri said.

“Because they have skilled players we have to be determined and humble at the same time. We shouldn’t be too confident because we have defeated Barcelona on Wednesday.

“We should know that we’ll be playing against a team which had 13 points more than us [earlier in the season]. We have regained those points, but we should keep on working hard..”

The match will have an extra twist as Mario Balotelli will take on his old club for the first time.
