International friendly preview: Brazil v Chile

Ronaldinho will have another chance to earn selection for the upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup when Brazil host Chile in an international friendly.

The two-time FIFA World Player of the Year retained his place in a South American-based squad scheduled to play Chile on Wednesday.

Ronaldinho, 33, was overlooked for friendlies against Italy and Russia earlier in the year but was recalled for Brazil’s match with Bolivia on April 6.

The Atletico Mineiro forward put in a man-of-the-match display, setting up three goals as Brazil ran out 4-0 winners.

Santos star Neymar, Corinthians striker Alexandre Pato and rumoured Tottenham Hostpur target Leandro Damiao of Internacional will vie with Ronaldinho for an attacking spot in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s starting XI.

Arsenal fullback Andre Santos, on loan at Gremio, has also been named in the squad, with Scolari hoping his team can build on the success of their most recent outing.

“We played better than expected against Bolivia and hopefully this team can have another good performance against Chile,” Scolari said.

Wednesday’s fixture offers Scolari another opportunity to run the rule over players before selecting his Confederations Cup squad.

Prior to the tournament, Brazil will also face England on June 2 and France a week later.

“This will give us more options to observe players,” Scolari said.

“It’s a final test to establish our style and to look at two or three players ahead of the Confederations Cup. After this match, I’ll have to decide on those who I’ll be able to count on during the competition.”

The match also gives Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli the chance to experiment ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Paraguay in June.

Chile’s most recent match was against Uruguay last month, a World Cup qualifier which they won 2-0 courtesy of goals from Esteban Paredes and Eduardo Vargas.
