Filippo Inzaghi racked up 300 career goals as the veteran striker bagged a brace in AC Milan’s 5-1 stroll at Siena on Sunday that boosted their quest to secure third place in Serie A.

But AS Roma’s bid to earn a top four spot, and the final Champions League qualifying berth, took a knock as their injury-ravaged side was held 2-2 at Sampdoria.

But in the picturesque Truscan city of Siena it was Inzaghi’s day as the 35-year-old took his tally to five goals in his last two matches.

Milan have had to reassess their aims for this season having dropped out of the title race and been beaten in both the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti has set his side’s sights on third place and an automatic place in next season’s Champions League group stages.

And goals from Andrea Pirlo and two from Pato, as well as Inzaghi’s brace, rendered Massimo Maccarone’s goal for Siena nothing more than a consolation.

As well as taking home three points, Milan also saw the return to action of Brazilians Kaka and Ronaldinho following injury.

Their first goal was a little soft as Houssine Kharja was harshly penalised for a foul on French midfielder Mathieu Flamini after the pair clash in the box.

Pirlo stroked home the penalty low to goalkeeper Gianluca Curci’s right on seven minutes.

It was a veteran pair who combined for Milan’s second just before the break as David Beckham swung over a corner that Inzaghi tapped home at the back post.

Any uncertainty over the result was unceremoniously dispatched by teenage forward Pato who scored a long distance howitzer 10 minutes after the break.

Former Middlesbrough forward Maccarone scored a consolation on 62 minutes before Inzaghi latched onto a delightful pass from Pirlo to fire home at the near post on 71 minutes.

Pato added the fifth 12 minutes from time after Curci rushed out of his area and missed the ball, presenting the Brazilian with a simple tap-in.

In Genoa, Roma were looking to bounce back from their draining Champions League exit in midweek and they were off to a flying start as Max Tonetto crossed for Julio Baptista to slide the ball home at the back post on seven minutes.

But Antonio Cassano twisted and turned on the left before crossing for Giampaolo Pazzini to head home the first of his two goals.

Roma goalkeeper Doni spilled a shot from Lithuanian Marius Stankevicius presenting Pazzini with an open goal.

But Baptista equalised from the spot after Marco Padalino was penalised for fouling Tonetto.

Former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni began his career on the Napoli bench with a 1-1 draw at rock bottom Reggina, meaning Napoli still have not won since early January.

Leaders Inter Milan host Fiorentina in the day’s late game while second placed Juventus cut Inter’s lead to four points with a 4-1 defeat of Bologna on Saturday.
