Is it time for Arsene to stop making excuses?

Didn't he put the team together?

“We were beaten by a far better side in the games against Manchester United and Chelsea. I’m afraid we are a very pretty team and we play great football but we are just not quite good enough to win anything. There is no doubt that I have made a mistake in not signing a top class striker, a midfielder to play alongside Cesc Fabregas, a decent goalkeeper and maybe another top class centre-back.”

No, I can’t imagine Arsene Wenger saying that either! What he did say, of course was that his team were naïve. He said that Chelsea defended with men behind the ball, had less of the possession, fouled when they needed to and failed to give a display of football. He has since said that he was misquoted and that he had complimented Chelsea.

Experience

He definitely did point out that the average age of his team was twenty-three and that of Chelsea was twenty-nine. He pointed out that the difference in experience was key.

What I don’t understand is the fact that as manager of Arsenal he is charged with the responsibility of winning trophies. His board say that money is available for him if he wants it, yet he chooses not to spend it. It is Arsene Wenger who chooses to play a young and relatively inexperienced side and then uses their inexperience to explain their defeats against the top sides. Am I missing something here?

Invest

Both Manchester United and Chelsea have shown that although Arsenal are a very good side, they are not yet in the same league as them. They have out-played, out-thought, out-fought and most importantly, out-scored them each time they have played. I’m afraid that Arsene Wenger will either have to change the habit of a lifetime and invest some serious money or he will have to stop blaming defeat on having such a young side.

So, let’s look at Wenger’s claim that his side has an average age of twenty-three and is too inexperienced and naïve.

Class

Manuel Almunia might not be a top class keeper in most people’s opinions but he is thirty-two years old and has played nearly one hundred games for the club. Bacary Sagna is twenty-six, played sixteen international matches for France and been voted France and England’s best right back. Gael Clichy is twenty-four, a French international and has won a Premier League winners medal.

Vermaelen is twenty-four, a Belgium international and cost €10 million. William Gallas is thirty-two. Played nearly eighty international matches and is in his ninth Premier League season.

International

Theo Walcott is only twenty but he has played seventy games for the club and has eight international caps. Abu Diaby is twenty-three, a French international and has played over eighty games. Cesc Fabregas is twenty-two, has nearly two hundred games for Arsenal and nearly fifty caps for Spain and has a European Championship winners medal.

Alex Song is twenty-two, has played sixty games for Arsenal and has represented his country, Cameroon, fifteen times. Samir Nasri is also twenty-two and he has fifteen caps for France. Lastly, Andrey Arshavin is twenty-eight and has played fifty times for Russia.

Country

All ten outfield players are international footballers and Manuel Almunia is the only one not to have represented his country. I should also point out that the average age of the side is actually twenty-five.

I guess what I am saying is that Arsene Wenger is running out of excuses. His side are totally his and he has made all the decisions about who to buy and who to sell. He has a team of established internationals who have an average age of twenty-five. If they are losing games to the top teams it is simply because they are not as good as them. He can’t keep blaming youth, inexperience, fouls or pitches.

I am a arsenal FAN and about wenger well

He has a habit of blaming. But about Team they did played well in both Man U and Chelsea games. Its the Arshavin….who is playing for himself and if he had passed that ball to Fabregas………Arsenal would have been 1-0 up in MAN U game….and I tell you its very important to take a lead in these kind of games……

Chelsea is a bunch of signings nothing else…..

Same thing happened in Chelsea game also they got 1-0 up and then it became hard for arsenal to come back……

They had Drogba and No Adebayor, No Robin Van Persie made hard for Arsenal.

You must agree its a form of two or three players in Team that matters most…..RVP was in great form.

Even if Wenger had bought any player he would not have played better than current team….

He was right that “He needs player like C. Ronaldo…..But that kind of player was not available in transfer window”.

I dont think ARSENAL played BAD……only thing was 2 consecutive losses put them 8 points behind leaders chelsea…….Thats the only thing!.

to the writer, yea, i can see what your saying but it seems more like you are just annoyed by Wenger. as an arsenal fan i do to, but he made the club which i used to dislike be the team i prefer to watch.
what he has done at arsenal is amazing. they are totally different from United and Chelsea or any team who might just buy whatever players the stats or even their fans say they need. even now, arsenal say they tried to make a big signing but couldn’t afford the one they were after.
i would agree with arsenal having a lack of depth, but how could you predict that RVP, Vela and Bendtner and others would all be injured at the same crucial time.

If Arsene remains adamant, the next big thing that may happen to Arsenal will be the departure of Cesc Fabregas. The lad is beginning to develop ‘inferiority complex’, not due to his own quality as a player but rather due to the quality of the Arsenal squad. Mark my words!

Well…I always have this thought that the board saying different things inside and outside…Inside, they will say,”make money, finish off stadium payment and dont ask more money from investors but generate money”…how? by qualifying to champions league, but young players cheap and sell to make money…etc etc….management wise…Wenger is the guy…but fans wont wait long…however, there isnt enough presure to do so anyway…or probably those pressures and gesture are mere gimmicks….let’s see

I do agree with this, even though i am the biggest arsenal fan.

You would have notice injuries and lack of solid players on the bench had cause their failures for the past 4 seasons.I would have believe that wenger would learn his lesson, and get a upgrade on his subs. No doubt every single year they have 11 amazing players on the pitch, but that is not enough to be the league winner.
Its really beat me why he is not spending any money, I do have a theory tho , that the club is still in big debt for their new beautiful stadium.
an other thing is that wenger has discovered many great talents in the last generation, But the current young stars( walcott, Nasri, or bendtner, eduardo, etccC) they are skillful but i am not sure they are right material for a top rated club. and why is all the players picked recently they are so small in body massES, wallcott is fast But I literally saw him flying IN the air when he got shoulder check by ashley cole who wasnt even that big
