Isaksson: France, England not good enough

Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson believes England and France are not good enough to win Euro 2012.

The former Manchester City shot-stopper has faced both sides and despite being beaten by the Three Lions, he insists there are several better teams left in the competition.

Asked about England’s prospects, Isaksson told Goal.com: “I don’t think they have the quality to win it. I think they are both good teams, but I think there are better teams in the tournament.”

After two defeats to start, the Swedes ended their campaign on a high by beating France 2-0 thanks to a stunning goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and another from Sebastian Larsson.

Isaksson said he was happy to have picked up the victory but insisted ending France’s 23-match unbeaten streak counted for little.

“I think we played well today. We were a bit unlucky in the first two games, and we should have had at least one or two points,” he said. “But we had a good finish, it doesn’t matter because we are out anyway, but it is good for the spirit of the team to finish with a good win.

“I don’t think it really matters that we ended France’s run. The most important thing was that we won and we did our best and we proved that we are a good team.

“This game was the beginning of something new, and it’s a good start for the following games in qualifying for the (2014) World Cup. So it’s good that we ended in a good way in this tournament.

“We just tried to do our best. We didn’t change anything. We were a bit sharper maybe today than against England.”

Ibrahimovic’s goal was a sensational scissor-kick volley and the keeper claimed the AC Milan striker was one of a select group in the world who could have executed such an effort.

“It was fantastic,” he said. “He’s a world-class player and he’s one of the few players who can score those kind of goals.”
