Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic says the Blues must learn from their mistakes of they are to regain the lead in the Premier League.

The champions of Europe travel to the Hawthorns on Saturday, where West Brom have had a strong start to the season, second only to Manchester City with regards to points picked up at home.

Although Ivanovic knows it will be a challenge for his side, he believes they can overcome their recent poor results to put further pressure on fellow title contenders City and Manchester United.

“I think in previous years we had almost exactly the same situation as we now have,” he told the club’s official website.

“We need to learn from these experiences, and from the last game against Liverpool we know we need to be more concentrated as a team to win matches.

“It’s important we get the points from this game against West Brom. We tried hard in the other games but we don’t have the points and we need to improve this.

“This is very important, to keep clean sheets. It’s the main thing for the defence to think about. We need to be motivated, compact and everybody needs to be concentrated.

“Sometimes we need to be more aggressive (and) angrier as we defend.”

The Serbia international believes his side can reclaim their spot at the top of the Premier League if they replicate their form earlier in the season, but insists they will need a good run of results.

“It’s not just one win we need, we need one win to start a run and to keep going after that. That’s the way to pass this busy period, which is so important for us,” he said.

“We are three points behind now, we were three ahead, so why in five games can we not be three in front again? We can do that if we win our games.”
