Portuguese daily newspaper Record understands that Benfica hope to extend the contract of star forward Jonas Goncalves Oliveira.

The 33-year-old will go down as one of the best signings in the history of the club, having gone on to score 96 goals in 107 league appearances after joining from Valencia on a free transfer.

Having bagged 31 goals in 27 Primeira Liga outings this term, Jonas is showing no signs of slowing down, and the club are now looking to offer him a contract until June 2020.

The Brazilian has another 15 months left on his current deal, but the club officials clearly don’t want to risk losing him in the summer and are prepared to extend his contract for another year.

Despite impressing at Benfica, Jonas only made one appearance for Brazil in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, back in March 2016 and he is highly unlikely to take part at the tournament finals.
