Julio Cesar regrets failed Benfica move

QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar admits he is disappointed to have missed out on deadline day move to Benfica.

The Brazilian was expected to complete a season-long loan to Estadio da Luz on transfer deadline day, but the deal failed to materialize.

He has, therefore, remained at QPR, where he will be playing second-division football for at least another six months.

Speaking ahead of the friendly match between Brazil and Portugal, Cesar admitted he was on the verge of joining the Eagles.

“There have been contacts with Benfica, but the window closed,” the 34-year-old told reporters at a press conference.

“I was happy with the interest of Benfica and other clubs. Now my head is at QPR.”

Julio Cesar had earlier missed out on a switch to Napoli due to the high wage demands, which in turn saw the Azzurri make a move on Pepe Reina instead.

The Brazilian shot-stopper joined QPR on a free transfer from Inter last summer, and he impressed in 24 Premier League appearances for the Rangers, but could not prevent his side from suffering relegation to the Championship.

Cesar is a greedy fool. He had about 4 or 5 of Europe’s top clubs interested in him in recent weeks and all the deals fell over due to him asking them to match his way-over-the-top wages at QPR. He’s chosen to play in the reserves in the Championship rather than play first team football for a top club – in my view he is a a greedy and misguided individual.
