Shinji Kagawa wants improved European performances for Manchester United after being inspired by Borussia Dortmund’s success.
The ex-Dortmund midfielder picked up a Premier League winner’s medal with his new club this season but they were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Real Madrid.
Dortmund have performed above expectations in the competition in reaching the final and the Japan international admitted that watching his former club do so well has made him determined to do better in Europe next season.
“I want to play better in the Champions League next season because I’ve been inspired to see Dortmund make it to the final,” he told United’s official Japanese site.
“I was encouraged to know there is a chance for me to be on the big stage with United.
“I’ve followed how they (Dortmund) are doing and have kept in touch with some of the players. Each time they progressed in the Champions League, I sent them a text to say congratulations.
“I expect it will be an exciting match and I hope Dortmund will be European champions.”
