Kansas City give up on Van der Vaart

Sporting Kansas City have all but confirmed they will not be signing Dutch midfield Rafael van der Vaart from Hamburg.

The MLS side were ready to offer the Netherlands international an escape route from Imtech Arena, seeing as he is set to leave HSV when his current deal expires in June.

Kansas City representatives have been in talks with the player’s agents for quite a while, but they have been unable to reach an agreement.

The club coach Peter Vermes has now moved to suggest that Van der Vaart is too expensive for them.

“It wouldn’t make sense for us,” Vermes told Kansas City Star. “No disrespect to him, but it doesn’t make sense for the kind of numbers we’re talking.”

Having enjoyed several good years after returning to Imtech Arena, Rafa van der Vaart has experienced all sorts of problems this term, and he has now started just one league game in the last two months.

The 32-year-old has been informed that he will not be offered a new deal and it now remains to be seen where the Oranje star will end up.
