The Times reports that Sunderland are interested in Sheffield United hitman, James Beattie, as cover for Kenwyne Jones. Jones had picked up a knee injury playing in an international friendly for his native Trinidad and Tobago against England earlier this month and may not be fit until Christmas.
Beattie, a 30 year old veteran of the Premiership, netted 22 times in all competitions last year for the Blades and was named their Player of the Year.
Rangers were also rumored to be interested in the former England striker, but his £40,000-a-week wages were too high.
