Khalid Boulahrouz is not too disappointed by Marco van Basten’s decision to drop the defender from the selection for Euro 2008.
Boulahrouz was in fact surprised to receive the invitation in the first place, after playing only six matches for Sevilla this season.
The player thanks Van Basten for the chance to show his form but stresses that the manager’s deal with Mario Melchiot - who would be selected if fit - is more important.
“I would have liked to play at Euro 2008, but the deal was clear. This was agreed to from the first day. It’s tough on me but I have to accept it. Van Basten gave me a chance to prove myself and I thank him for that,” said Boulahrouz.
It is expected that Boulahrouz will return to his actual employer, Chelsea, this summer.
