Steve Cherundolo has revealed United States national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann was aware of his decision to retire on Wednesday.

Cherundolo featured at three FIFA World Cups for his country and spent his entire club career with Bundesliga outfit Hannover.

However, multiple knee surgeries have taken their toll on the right-back, who has opted to hang up his boots after a failed attempt at a comeback earlier in the domestic campaign.

And the 35-year-old stated the news would not come as a surprise to Klinsmann.

“I’ve talked to Jurgen Klinsmann,” he said. “He was well aware this decision was going to be made.”

The United States have been drawn in Group G for the tournament in Brazil, alongside Germany, Portugal and Ghana.
