Klinsmann challenges fringe players

United States coach Juergen Klinsmann is confident his fringe players will make the most of their chance when they take on Canada on Tuesday.

An American side missing a host of European-based stars have been locked in a training camp in southern California for the past three weeks with the friendly against their neighbours bringing an end to their time together.

Klinsmann believes the match represents a great opportunity for some of the less-recognised players to impress him with the German expecting his side to come out firing.

“What we would like to see tomorrow is all the work the guys put in to the last three weeks pays off,” Klinsmann said.

“They take that swing and show us what they have, express themselves, enjoy the game. Obviously we want to win this game and finish off the camp on a very high note.

“Every individual player can leave their mark, make an impression and show us that you are ready for the next level, the next challenge.

“It will be different, definitely, the starting 11 they are maybe a notch ahead of the other guys and they’ve already defined a little bit of a ranking within that group of 23 players.

“For all 23 now we open the door into this busy 2013 and they give us more options in every position out there.”

Despite opponents Canada losing 4-0 to Denmark in a friendly last week, Klinsmann is not taking anything for granted ahead of the clash in Houston with last year’s disappointing 0-0 against their neighbours still a source of grievance for the 48-year-old.

“We want to win this game because we put a lot of work in the last three-and-a-half weeks,” he said.

“Obviously we are not blinded by the result that they had against Denmark, we are not taking that game as a measurement and I think Canada is trying to prepare their players as well as they can for the challenges ahead.

“They are rebuilding their programme right now, but we are not taking a previous result as an indication to what might happen tomorrow night.

“We have our issues with our own game in Toronto last summer which I wasn’t pleased at all with, so I would like to finish off these three-and-a-half weeks on good note.”
