Klinsmann wants USA to improve

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann says his team need to improve ahead of their second World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

The US opened their campaign to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup with an encouraging 3-1 win over Antigua and Barbuda in Florida on Friday.

But Klinsmann insisted there was still plenty of room for improvement going into their match away to Guatemala on Tuesday.

“I think Antigua did a very good job defending, they made it very tight, they made it difficult for us to create more chances,” the former Germany international said.

“I think we created quite a few chances and we could have scored a few more goals, and those games are tricky.

“At the end of the day I think the three points is the starting point we wanted to have, we have that.

“We know obviously after an evening like that we have to step it up a lot going into Guatemala, which we will do.

“So overall, I complement Antigua, I complement the crowd – over 23,000 came to the game, it was amazing, wonderful weather, Florida weather.

“Now we have got to look towards Tuesday and we have got to give Guatemala a real fight.”

The USA’s all-time leading scorer Landon Donavon echoed his manager’s comments.

“We were OK, we can improve. They were a little more organized defensively than I thought they might be, but they did a good job, so give them credit,” he said.

“The important thing is to win and get qualifying started the right way.”

Clint Dempsey was on the scoresheet along with Carlos Bocanegra and Herculez Gomez, and the Fulham star said it was a confidence boost ahead of the trip to Guatemala.

“It was good for me to get a goal, it helped my confidence to be in front of goal,” said Dempsey, who converted a 44th-minute penalty.

“Now it’s about getting the job done in Guatemala. I’m feeling good. We would have liked to have kept a clean sheet tonight but we didn’t, but at the same time we still got the win and we have got to look at the positives.

“Like I said earlier we want to qualify for the World Cup and we have to win games away from home and that starts with the next game.”
