Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp believes Robert Lewandowski will remain at the club next season.
The Polish star destroyed Real Madrid with four goals on Wednesday to give Dortmund the upper hand in their Champions League semi-final tie, but there are fears Lewandowski may follow star Mario Gotze through the exit door.
Lewandowski’s agent has claimed his client, who has just over a year left on his current contract, will link up with Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, with whom Gotze signed for 31.5 million pounds on Tuesday.
However, Klopp insists he knows nothing of Lewandowski’s alleged move to the Allianz Arena and said he was left baffled by comments made by the striker’s representative, Maik Barthel.
“My understanding is that Robert will still be here next year,” Klopp said.
“The fact is that we are going very well this season. Why should we care about next year? Nobody knows what will happen next year.
“I cannot understand why an agent is speaking about a player that is under contract. I have many strange thoughts about all of this.”
Despite Gotze’s confirmed exit and rumours of Lewandowski’s, Dortmund brushed aside Real Madrid in Dortmund but there will be little time to bask in the glory.
A trip to relegation threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf awaits the reigning Bundesliga champions on Saturday.
Klopp confirmed Lewandowski’s Polish team-mate Lukasz Piszczek was a doubt for Dusseldorf and the second leg against Real in Spain as he turns his attention to the Bundesliga.
“He’s definitely out of the game against Dusseldorf this weekend,” he said.
“And it’s even going to be tight for the return fixture against Madrid on Tuesday.
“We want to come second in the league, we haven’t achieved that so far. We want to qualify for the Champions League so we still have aims for this season.
“But if we will drop down one position in the table, it won’t matter as much for us as Dusseldorf. So the focus for Dusseldorf is different to ours for sure.”
