Kompany wants City stay; Wenger optimistic Walcott will sign new deal

Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany has revealed that he does not intend to leave the Etihad Stadium in favour of joining La Liga giants FC Barcelona or Real Madrid, Sky Sports understands.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who joined City from Hamburg on a four-year deal for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £6 million in August 2008, feels as if he would be overshadowed by the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo if he joined either of the Spanish giants.

“It would take me time at another club to reach the level I have achieved with City. Even then there would be no guarantee I could do it,” Kompany told The Sun.

“Besides, I am convinced that I can win just as many honours with City as I could with Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“Whoever goes to play for Real will be in Ronaldo’s shadow, and whoever joins Barca will be overshadowed by Messi. So I prefer to be captain of Manchester City.

“I feel very much at home here and am able to live a normal life. I get interest from paparazzi, but so long as you behave normally there is no problem.”

Since joining City in August 2008, Kompany has made at least 25 league appearances in each of his first four full seasons with the Citizens. In addition, the Belgium international has undoubtedly established himself as one of the top defenders in the world, and rightfully so.

Manchester City — who have started the 2012-13 English Premier League season with nine points from five matches (2-3-0) — are currently in 7th place in the Premier League table.

Wenger optimistic Walcott will sign new deal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger remains hopeful that Theo Walcott will agree to terms on a new deal with Arsenal, but has insisted that the England international winger could be sold if an agreement is not reached when the transfer window reopens in January, Sky Sports reports.

Walcott replaced Lukas Podolski in the 72nd minute during Arsenal’s away fixture against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

He did not offer much to the game, but the Gunners did level the scoring with him on the pitch courtesy of a goal from an unlikely hero, centre-back Laurent Koscielny.

Walcott has netted once in four league appearances for the Gunners this season. He finished last season with eight goals and eight assists in 35 Premier League appearances, second to Van Persie on both accounts.
