New signing Mateo Kovacic cannot believe his luck after being handed the number 10 shirt at Inter Milan.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder joined Andrea Stramaccioni’s side from Dynamo Zagreb after the two clubs came to agreement on a reported 11 million-euro fee.

The highly rated youngster admits he did not expect the move to materialise, and is overjoyed to be handed the number 10 jersey vacated by Wesley Sneijder.

“I was a bit surprised,” he told the press.

“But I’m very proud and happy to be at a club such as this one.

“I’m also honoured that I’ll be able to wear the number 10, but it’s not really about the number on my back – I have to play well.”

The young Croatian spoke of his admiration for compatriot Robert Prosinecki, but said he will not try to imitate the midfielder.

“Robert Prosinecki is my favourite footballer of all time, but I like being myself,” he said.

“What matters is that I give it everything. I really like the tactical side and I think I can offer a lot through the middle.

“I can play in a deep midfield position, but also an attacking one. But it’s not up to me, that’s the coach’s job.

“I know Italian football is tough but I’ll get used to it.”
