Real Betis were pegged back to a 1-1 draw by at home by Athletic Bilbao in La Liga’s only match on Monday.

The hosts could have moved within three points of champions Real Madrid but were denied before half-time by Aritz Aduriz’s neat chip.

Betis went ahead in just the second minute through Ruben Castro’s spot kick after Salva Sevilla was brought down inside the box.

It was Castro’s 12th goal of the season but Bilbao were unlucky not to draw level shortly after when Ander Herrera had his low drive tipped away.

Herrera had another effort drift wide just minutes before Aduriz dinked the ball over an onrushing Adrian on 41 minutes to level the scores.

Bilbao had several chances in the second half and will be thankful Adrian was good enough to deny Oscar de Marcos’ superb stoppage-time effort.

Betis stay in fourth position while Bilbao are down in 14th.
