Lambert backs Dortmund for Champions League glory

Borussia Dortmund have what it takes to win the UEFA Champions League this season, according to former midfielder Paul Lambert.

Dortmund welcome Juventus to Westfalenstadion on Wednesday, trailing the Serie A champions 2-1 in their last-16 tie.

While Jurgen Klopp’s men are focused on the task at hand, Lambert – whose solitary season with Dortmund resulted in the 1996-97 Champions League title – is adamant the Bundesliga outfit can better their 2012-13 runners-up medal.

Lambert was sacked as Aston Villa manager in February.

“Absolutely. Bayern are obviously very strong, a great team with a great coach,” Lambert told Bundesliga.com.

“But it would be a big success [for the Bundesliga] to have two teams go through to the last eight.”

Firstly, Dortmund must overcome a first-leg deficit to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Dortmund’s home form in the Champions League bodes well against Juventus – who they upstaged in the final 18 years ago – having won 11 of their past 15 European matches.

“I think they’ve got a great chance, I really do, especially being at home,” said Lambert.

“The fans will really help them, but Dortmund also have world-class players in their squad.

“There are goals in the team and they’re one of the best sides in the competition, and if Dortmund produce what they’re capable of, I don’t see why they can’t qualify.”
