Laudrup hesitates over Tiendalli

Michael Laudrup has hailed Dwight Tiendalli’s contributions this season but is remaining coy over a possible contract extension.

Swansea signed the Dutchman on a one-year deal earlier this season after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor was ruled out for the entire campaign by an ankle injury.

And, though the Dane described Tiendalli as an ‘important’ part of the recent success, he refused to be drawn on whether the former FC Twente player would remain at the club.

“Dwight’s been important for us. Maybe he’s had his best games at right back not at left because being a right footed left back is very different,” the Dane told reporters.

“But I have been pleased with his work. We brought him in to help Ben because my intention was not to put all the pressure on a young player knowing you have one player in one position. Ben has coped fantastically with it.

“But we will have to see (if he will get a new contract).

“We still have an issue here in the squad where we have to think that one thing is the quality of the players, the second is the economic part and the third is we have to deal – especially club like Swansea – the number of British players.”

The 27-year-old has made 16 appearances for Swansea this season, helping the Welsh outfit to mid-table in the Premier League as well as a historic Capital One Cup triumph.
